I went back and re-did the fascia over top of the old one. There's two things different this time.
First I didn't cut a lowered area for where the water is. I had initially thought this would be a very bad idea, but after studying a number of layouts I changed my mind. In any case, it should make sealing the bottom of the water areas to prevent leaking much easier.
Second, I painted it a different color. The original color I had gone with was too blue and a bit too light. I wanted something that was dark but not full black and didn't jump out as being un-natural. I picked up paint that was a bit darker and had more red instead of blue. I'm happy with this color much more so.
On the functional side of things I finished laying all of the track that isn't on a bridge or pier and painted it all Rail Tie Brown then dusted it a tad with Rust.
Up next I want to start filling in the gap between the upper level and the bottom of the water and begin preparing to scenic the water front area. I also need to get serious about what structures will go where and perhaps print out some mockups and set them up on the layout.
One challenge I'll need to address is that the backdrop on these sections were designed to be taken off. That might not be an issue, but because the depth of the sections are so narrow, I need to be able to have the scenery built right up and then on to the backdrop. To accommodate this I think I'm going to make a false lower backdrop out of foamcore and foam.
