I did some more building today.
The roof skeleton was too long on the On30 18 ft. boxcar, so I cheated and shortened the one I had build down a tad.
But you know building in wood while it's easy to shape on one hand isn't what I think makes better rolling stock. So instead I set the wood one aside and tried a 2nd in styrene.
Now, I also made another change which was I switched the 2nd model from On30 to Sn3. I've never really done anything in S scale, but from what I can tell it seems like the perfect narrow gauge size. Anyways, I scaled down the plans (75%) and started again.
Ok well so far so good, but once I saw it on the track...
...then it looked a little funny. This chassis would feel really awkward for a boxcar, but I think it'll make a great chassis for a caboose. So I set it aside for later and started again.
I went back to the plans and updated them from an 18 ft. boxcar to a 24 ft.
And started building again...
Except when I re-drew it, I didn't move the location of the bolsters to account for the new width. It now looks like a late 1800's european boxcar. Ok well, rip those off and try again.
Well that feels a bit better.
Starting to take shape... (this was after I spilled the styrene cement, again)
Now it's actually looking like a box car. Time for some details.
Well now that's not so bad. It still needs the roof walk, needle beams, and grabs but looks good so far.
Here it is with the original On30 18 ft. car for comparison.
The proportions still seem "off" for some reason. The 18' car looks completely wrong, but the 24 footer still seems too wide and/or tall.
ReplyDeleteGlad to see you scratchbuilding though! :)
